First, let me describe the setting. This event took place at Lord's Cricket Ground. This is a beautiful and historic stadium, located not too far from the infamous Abbey Rd. (of Beatles fame). They created special reviewing stands, and we had "primo" seats. We were in the lower tier, seated exactly at the same line where the archers lined up to shoot.
While waiting on line to get in, I could tell that Korea was a contender. There were many fanatical supporters. Turns out Korea was the hands-down favorite. The competition started with Korea and a perfect 10 bulls eye. I was immediately wowed by their team's skill. They moved on to the next round. Then came Team USA. We won our round nicely and soon it was time for USA vs Korea.
Everyone around was saying "no chance" for Team USA. And then, a miracle. On the last round of shooting, each American shot a perfect 10 bulls eye, knocking Korea to the bronze medal match and winning a chance for gold!
The gold medal match was between Team USA and Italy. By the last round, the teams were only one point apart. Italy was going last and they needed to get a 10 to win, and they did. Watch a clutch shot! Although Team USA did not win, this match was an amazing thing to see. Well done, Italy.
Then came the medals ceremony. The archers were led onto the field by the medal and flower bearers, and they played the theme song from Chariots of Fire. Chariots is one of my favorite movies so I got a bit emotional as this all unfolded. It was a real "pinch me" moment.
All in all, an excellent day. The London 2012 staff was impressive, the crowd was spirited, and the athletes gave us all a real treat. Bravo to all!
Tomorrow - Diving and our first visit to the Olympic Park!
