I thought it would be a good time to recap what life has been like in the year that has passed for the newly minted Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. On the “common side”, they set up house in Wales and adopted a puppy, Lupo. Kate was once photographed buying groceries. (Was she at Tesco?)
And then there is the “other side” . . . They had a very successful trip to Canada and the US last summer. In the fall, they engaged in humanitarian work, visiting a UNICEF aid center in Denmark to learn more about its effort to help alleviate famine and draught in East Africa. Both Will and Kate have a “genuine” style - both approachable, endearing and dignifying.
Kate is mindful of her charity work. After much personal research, she’s chosen to be a patron of the National Portrait Gallery along with charities that support addiction recovery, children’s hospice care, art for children and scouting. The palace is easing her into this work, mindful of Diana’s unfortunate experience – too much exposure too soon.
Any public appearance has all eyes watching, as Kate has become the world’s newest fashion icon. She’s been a huge boost to the British fashion industry. It’s not unusual for her dresses to sell out within an hour of appearing in print. I always take delight in what the Duchess is wearing, in particular the hats. I loved that Red Maple Leaf fascinator she wore on the Canadian trip.
Will is still committed to his military service. He’s a search and rescue pilot in the RAF. He had a six week tour of the Falkland Islands earlier this year. While he was away, the Queen invited Kate to join her on the start of her Diamond Jubilee tour of the UK. Ahhh, what a nice grandma. Even the Queen knows that Kate is the new “it” girl.
On the horizon - Will and Kate (along with Prince Harry) will be ambassadors for the London Olympics this summer. And, in September, they will help the Queen with the Jubilee events by being her representative in Malaysia and Singapore (and a few other realms of the Commonwealth). And then, of course, there is the endless talk of a royal baby. All in due time, I suppose.
I just smile every time I see a story about what they are up to, and think about that day one year ago when Kate waved to me as she was driven to the Abbey with her dad, and when I was able to take ‘‘happy snaps” of the newly married couple on the balcony at Buckingham Palace. The magic of this global superstar couple continues.
